Red sludge from alumina factory reservoir pollutes village in Hungary. At least one person was killed after the dam a sludge reservoir at a big alumina factory in western Hungary burst, flooding parts two villages. Three people were missing and 10 were taken to hospital, two them with serious injuries. Ambulance workers said they treated 60 people, as many as 10 whom had serious injuries.
The wave toxic sludge that has poured into seven villages in Hungary could take up to 12 months and tens millions dollars to clean up, ficials have warned.
Zoltan Illes, the environment minister, told the BBC the clean-up the country's worst chemical accident would take at least one year and probably require technical and financial assistance from the European Union.
