Gypsies By Patrick Cariou
|
It took Cariou over ten years to gather the photos of his travels for this project. The award-winning French photographer Patrick Cariou is back with a stunning new book, "Gypsies". Cariou’s book is a journey that portrays the lives of the gypsies from Western Europe, through Eastern Europe, the Middle-East, all the way to India and the origins of the Romany people.
The result is both captivating and intriguing, showing the diversity in terms of ethnic types in the various clans and differences in living conditions, from bling loving Manouches in France to extremely poor Roms in Slovakia to blonde, blue-eyed children in Afghanistan. Cariou’s documentary approach in his work succeeds again in sharing his fascination for people on the margins of society. Known for his previous equally stunning monograph projects, "Surfers" and "Yes Rasta", Patrick Cariou recently won a lawsuit against Richard Prince who used his photographs in his own art without permission, creating a commove in the artworld.
