The equipment used by a professional photographer usually includes a fast telephoto lens and a camera that has an extremely fast shutter speed and sustained burst rate that can rapidly take pictures. In general, monopod are often used in order to support the weight of the heavy equipment and stabilise the camera. Preferred camera bodies for the modern sport photographer are those with fast autofocusing ability and a high frame rate (usually 8 frames per second or faster). The flagship sports cameras produced by Canon and Nikon are the Canon 1D-series and the Nikon D3, and these are the most popular in professional sports.
Different sports favor different lenses, but sports photography usually requires fast (wide aperture) telephoto lenses, with fast autofocus performance. Fast autofocus is needed to focus on movement, telephoto to get close to the action, and wide aperture serves several purposes:
