Photography With The Paparazzi Approach By Ron Galella
|
A Bronx native, Galella served as a United States Air Force photographer during the Korean War and attended the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, California, graduating with a degree in Photojournalism in 1958. He currently lives in New Jersey with his wife of 30 years, Betty Burke Galella.
On June 12, 1973 Galella lost five teeth and suffered a broken jaw after actor Marlon Brando punched him outside a restaurant in Chinatown. Galella followed Brando, who was accompanied by talk show host Dick Cavett, after a taping of the Dick Cavett Show in New York City. Brando paid a $40,000 out-of-court settlement and Galella decided to drop the assault charge. A few months after the incident Galella was back photographing Brando and jokingly wore a football helmet to show there were no hard feelings, at least from him.
