|
Health Minister Jaime Mañalich stated, "The situation is very similar to the one experienced by astronauts who spend months on end in the space station." On 31 August, a team from NASA in the United States arrived in Chile to provide assistance. The team includes two physicians, one psychologist, and an engineer.
Rescue
The procedure to retrieve the miners, dubbed Operación San Lorenzo, commenced on Tuesday, 12 October 2010 at 19:00 CLDT. The first rescuer lowered to the miners was Manuel González Pavez (an employee mining company Codelco), on 12 October 2010 at 23:18, following a lengthy delay during which the rescue team on the surface encouraged and motivated him. During the trip, the waiting families and rescue team sang the Canción Nacional (Chile's national anthem). González arrived in the collapsed mine and made contact with the miners at 23:36.
