The spelling in the Oxford Encyclopedic English Dictionary, Third Edition (1996), is 'foetus' with 'foetuses' as the plural; 'fetus' is given as the 'US variant of foetus.' However, later editions of the OED clarify the etymology behind the Commonwealth spelling.
