• The History
Oculi was born of a collective response to the lack of support for local independent documentary story telling. As acclaimed practicing photographers they shared a sense of frustration with the limitations for publishing and recognition of their uncompromising stories and images in Australia.
The creation of the website oculi.com.au in 2001 was a ‘porthole’ on life in Australia as it happens, portraying the social landscape, not just the physical landscape. Oculi is an ‘art-house movement; in Australia, an unoccupied photographic space, which will expand to expose, exhibit and promote images of contemporary culture in Australia.
Oculi’s work is represented throughout America by Redux Photo Agency and throughout Europe by L’Agence VU based in Paris, founded by Christian Caujolle in 1986 and now recognized as Europe’s leading photographer’s agency.
