LCS, Littoral Combat Ship Vessel
|
The MH-60S was to be used for mine clearing from the LCS, but testing has found it lacks the power to safely tow the detection equipment. This mission is to be assigned to some sort of robotic boat instead.
- Irregular warfare and amphibious modules
The Navy has included an irregular warfare package in its 2012 budget request to Congress.
Under Secretary of the Navy Robert O. Work has said that marines will deploy from littoral combat ships. Duncan D. Hunter has written that the 55 LCS buy was made at the cost of 10 fewer amphibious vessels needed to support the USMC. Assistant Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Joseph Dunford has said that the LCS is one of the platforms under consideration to help close the gap in amphibious shipping. The Navy is currently working on the requirements for a module to support these sorts of operations.
